Why Upaon-Açu?
Upaon-Açu is a Brazilian island in the state of Maranhão, with an area of 1,410.015 km² and is part of the Golfão Maranhense Archipelago and is where the state capital, São Luís, is located.
The name Upaon-Açu was given by the Tremembés (Tupi-Guarani) Indians and means “big island”. It was also called São Luís Island. The indigenous name was reestablished by the constitution of Maranhão: Art. 8 – The city of São Luís, on the island of Upaon-Açu, is the state capital.
Thus, the 39th Brazilian Soil Science Congress pays homage to the Tremembés – people originally from Maranhão Island. The site is part of a system with a great diversity of ecotones and a huge distribution of soil classes.
Maranhão is located in a transition zone between the Amazon, the Cerrado and the Caatinga, whose thriving and diverse agriculture brings great benefits to the development of the state.
