Recovery of degraded areas in Brazil could strongly boost the fertilizer market. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), fertilizer use, projected at 62.7 million tons by 2036, could reach 73.1 million tons with the implementation of the Caminho Verde Brasil Program, representing a 16.5% increase.
The country has 40 million hectares of degraded areas that can be recovered. The biggest challenge, however, lies in the cost of soil recovery, which ranges from R$ 6,000 to R$ 12,000 per hectare, considering fertilizers, machinery, seeds, and labor.
The estimate was presented by José Carlos Polidoro, executive advisor at MAPA, during the 12th Brazilian Fertilizer Congress, promoted by ANDA in São Paulo.
